Elected Member Training Register

Council is committed to the professional development of elected members to assist with fulfillment of their role as an elected member.

Under section 5.126 and 5.127 of the Local Government Act 1995, each Council member must complete Council Member Essentials training within 12 months of being elected to Council.

This only applies to those members elected at the ordinary election in October 2019 and beyond. The local government must prepare a report for each financial year on the training completed by Council members within the financial year. The CEO is to publish the report on the local government's official website within 1 month after the end of the financial year to which the report relates.

(1) A local government must prepare a report for each financial year on the training completed by council members in the financial year

(2) The CEO must publish the report on the local government’s official website within 1 month after the end of the financial year to which the report relates.

Exemptions

A person who is a council member on the day on which the Local Government Regulations Amendment (Induction and Training) Regulations 2019, regulation 8 comes into effect is exempt from the requirement in s 5.126(1) until the end of their term of office [Reg s.36(2)]

Council Members can access training and development programs as per Council Policy

Note: All Council Members were also reminded of their obligations under the Local Government Act 1995 during the year with respect to the following matters:

  • Primary and Annual Declarations of Financial Interest;
  • Compliance with the Council’s Adopted Code of Conduct; and
  • Local Government Act 1995 - Rules of Conduct.
