This September, the Shire of Moora turns its attention to heritage — not as something we simply read about, but as something we can experience through the stories told by our elders, family members and friends passing through. It helps us remember where we came from, so that we can be more intentional with our future direction.
On the 19th, we celebrate the 115th Moora Show. This event goes all the way back to 1908, when a special train from Perth brought visitors out for the newly established show. Through wars, droughts and the Depression, our community has kept it going, year after year choosing to turn up and celebrate the land we work and love.
Just two weeks earlier, on the 5th, we welcome Peter Salmon to Moora. Peter is a 93-year-old Thiinma Elder and the last living speaker of his language. He'll be bringing his show Piyalbajarri to town alongside Rosie Sitorus. Peter's story is one of resilience, shaped by both his Thiinma heritage and a life spent working on pastoral stations across the Pilbara and Kimberley. It's truth telling in its simplest form — not a political label, but a man finally given the chance to tell his own story, on his own terms.
Two very different events, but they point to the same idea: heritage isn't something that just sits in the past. It's kept alive by people who remember, who keep showing up, and who are willing to share their stories, so they're not lost. Whether it's a century-old show ground or a language spoken by only one person left, what we choose to hold onto says a lot about what matters to us as a community.
