Welcome to the Shire of Moora
Schools Working with the Shire of Moora for National Tree Planting Day
National Tree Day is Australia’s biggest community tree planting event. The Shire of Moora is working with local schools for the Schools Tree Day on Friday 26th June 2009. Each year our local schools plant trees locally in selected sites, trees are ordered through the local TAFE and paid for by the Shire of Moora. The Shire of Moora works crew invest time and energy in preparing the site for the planting, and this effort continues after the planting, when they start the watering and maintenance program. For the past few years planting has been at West End, and we have selected a site in this region again for our 2009 planting. For those children volunteering, it is a wonderful time investment, with a result that they can see grow over the years.
For any community members that would like to assist with this day and the planting please call the Shire of Moora on 96511 401 or email the co-ordinator Rebecca Kelly on rkelly@moora.wa.gov.au, to place your name on the volunteer register. For those who have registered or are thinking of registering all that you are required to bring is your own gloves and spade, a hat, water bottle and wear closed in shoes.
Mobile Muster
MobileMuster is the official national recycling program of the mobile phone industry in Australia. Initiated voluntarily by the telecommunications industry in 1999 its overall aim is to prevent mobile phones ending up in landfill.
The program collects and recycles mobile phone handsets, batteries and accessories from a network of over 2000 mobile phone retailers, local councils, government agencies and businesses drop off points across Australia. As part of Council’s commitment to environmental issues within the Shire of Moora, we openly encourage recycling within our community.
The Shire of Moora has been a collection point for old phones as part of the Mobile Muster program. The Shire of Moora has proactively contacted businesses within Moora that sell phones and asked them to come on board with the program and have a collection point in their business. Such businesses would only have to advertise with posters and locate a cardboard box in your store. Once the box is full the only other task required is to empty the box and send the contents free of charge to mobile muster.
We identify that community education is vital to our sustainability for the future, and we encourage projects like this one as part of a perpetual part of learning for youth and community alike.
