Capture Moora Photo Competition!

We want to see Moora through your lens. We are looking for photos that best capture Moora and the natural beauty of the Shire. Photos to be emailed to shire@moora.wa.gov.au by 7th October 2024. Maximum of 5 photos per person. Open to everyone! Winners will be announced on 14th October 2024. The winning photographs will feature on the Shire website banner for one month and we reserve the right to use them going forward for promotional purposes.

Rates Prize Draw

On Monday, 2nd September 2024, CEO Gavin Robins and Manager of Financial Services Geize Teixeira (pictured below), conducted the draw for the early payment of Shire rates. The $600 prize winner was A. L. McKinnon & L. Wise, who were pleasantly surprised to discover they were randomly drawn from the rates database. The chance to win was open to ratepayers who paid their rates in full within 21 days of the notice.

Free VacSwim Lessons this Summer

The State Government has announced that the VacSwim summer swimming program will be free to all WA kids these summer school holidays. Lessons, which range from five to 10 days in length, and pool entry will be free for all students who enrol. Enrolments are open now and will close 16 October. With the imminent arrival of renewable energy in the Shire of Moora, we have taken the opportunity to conduct a “Renewable Energy 101” for community members. It will be held on Tuesday 10th September, at the Moora Recreation Centre, between 6-8pm. The programme will discuss the current nature of renewable energy in Western Australia, policy settings, the structure of the WA electricity grid and the part played by renewable energy in supporting the transition of the grid to an increasing reliance of renewable technologies.

Amendment of Shire of Moora Local Planning Scheme No 4 (LPS 4): The Shire of Moora has undertaken consultation with developers planning the construction of renewable energy projects in the Shire. At this time, these projects only relate to wind farms although the emergence of new technologies is expected to introduce more renewable technology as the expansion of the renewable energy sector continues to gain momentum across Australia. In preparation for this, the Shire of Moora is preparing to embrace renewable energy technologies, including wind turbines, new transmission and storage infrastructure and emerging technologies which are intended to help achieve the state’s net-zero emissions targets.

Kerkhoff Carnaby Cockatoo has a Home

The Kerkhoff Carnaby Group is delighted to confirm it will build the Carnaby cockatoo sculpture between the Youth Centre and netball courts. In confirming this news, Topsy De Vries and Tracy Lefroy said they were excited about the decision as it enables the Kerkhoff Carnaby Group to proceed with arrangements to build the statue. The Youth Centre and Skate Park will remain where they are and will eventually be refurbished as part of the sport and recreation precinct renewal.

The Shire of Moora Rates Notices were distributed this week. Most ratepayers would have noticed that their rates have increased this year. In addition, rates for some properties have increased more than others, due to factors relating to individual properties. We understand this can be confusing and frustrating, and we are listening. We would like to provide information regarding rates generally and explain why they have increased.  

Streets Alive

Town Team Movement, in partnership with the State Government and the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), announced the Streets Alive program earlier this year. The program funded from State Funds for Local Government Roads consists of $5 million over 5 years for capacity building and support for eligible community organisations and local governments, for projects designed to calm traffic on local roads in urban areas across WA.

The Shire of Moora is thrilled to have been awarded $210,000 over three years in funding from the State Government’s Regional Arts Venues Support program (RAVS).    This generous grant is part of the ongoing commitment by the WA Government to support and enhance regional performing arts.   Shire of Moora Events Coordinator, Natalie Maloy expressed immense gratitude for the funding.

An Update on the Kerkhoff Carnaby Cockatoo Proposal

The Kerkhoff Carnaby Group and Shire would like to provide an update on the status of the Kerkhoff Carnaby Cockatoo Proposal, which was discussed at length in Wednesday night’s Council Meeting. As you may be aware, the Kerkhoff Carnaby Group (KCG) has raised funding to construct a large, 11 metre high, Carnaby cockatoo structure. Council gave its in principle support to the project on 21st October 2020, and consequently a formal project proposal was provided by KCG on 2 October 2023. Through the Kerkhoff Carnaby Working Group, it was agreed between the Kerkhoff Carnaby Group and the Shire that the project will remain the responsibility of the KCG until the structure has been built and will then be handed over to the Shire to manage thereafter.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our colleague and friend, Brian Prosser, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, 10th June 2024. Brian has been a part of our outside work crew since November 2023. His death has come as a great shock to everyone involved. We would like to pass our condolences on to Brian’s family.

Recent community meetings regarding the Moora Sport and Recreation Complex Concept Plan have been a successful vehicle for local clubs to ask questions and provide feedback to the Shire, as it prepares to apply for the appropriate grant funding. The project will be divided into several stages that reflect the priority needs of a range of sporting clubs and the state of their respective infrastructure. Stage 1 of the project is currently addressing: The redevelopment of the existing hockey building to accommodate the needs of other sports – Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis and Darts.

War Memorial Restoration

The Shire of Moora applied for funding to restore the community’s stone War Memorial Statue and was awarded over $50,000. On receival of written confirmation of the grant, restoration on the memorial will commence and will mark the 100-year anniversary of its installation.

Ripe Magazine, a special lift out in the Farm Weekly, has written an article about the Miling Roadhouse and how a couple of dedicated local farmers, with the help of the Miling Co-op, saw the potential in a closed and rundown business, and turned it into a thriving part of the community. In over seven months, Ms Thorniley, Mr White and their employees have made exceptional progress into bringing the roadhouse into functional glory and a place where locals can go to get food . Please find below a schedule outlining pool closures and altered hours for the remainder of the season, due to swimming carnivals and the Moora Triathlon. Please note, the pool will be closed on Good Friday, 29th March, and Sunday, 31st March will be the last day of the season.
